Training Opportunities

Providers achieve and maintain professional caregiver status largely through ongoing training. All approved providers, workers in day care centres and foster parents in Alberta are involved in the same provincial training, which includes information on safety, child development, child abuse and inclusion of all children, among other topics. Consultants take new providers through the core or basic training which takes about 6 months. Once this is complete, or while it is being completed the provider chooses one of the following available self study courses:

Step Ahead Provider Training – developed by the Alberta Family Child Care Association after consultation with providers.
Canadian Family Child Care Training – developed by the Canadian Child Care Federation.

Also available are annual provider conferences, agency workshops and workshops and training in the community, including Grant MacEwan College courses.
