Organize your home with a safe space indoors for younger children to play with blocks and toys and a space for older children to play with art supplies, games and toys with small pieces - either separate from the younger children, or up above them, eg. kitchen table with spare chairs removed so younger children cannot climb up or a small table in another room with a gate separating the older ones from the younger ones.

Plan activities that include all the children at their different levels of development. Creative time with the older children making things out of fun junk, the younger ones playing on the floor in the tote the junk was stored in.

Realize that all children need challenges of learning and doing. A one year old’s challenge is learning to walk. A two year old’s challenge is learning to communitcate and manipulate objects. A four year old needs to be kept very busy learning more advanced things – Hence the ever persistant questions ”Why? Where? What? How?” As you strive to give him the answers, you can facilitate his learning by pointing things out and asking him questions in return. “Why do you suppose ………?” then helping him discover the answers.

Find out what the children are passionate about. What their particular talents are and find ways to incorporate the things they love into your activities.

Fill their world with games that teach them to listen and follow directions, print their name, recognize simple words, give them counting opportunities and colour associations. As you prepare the older children in this manner for kindergarten, the younger ones will enjoy being caught up in the learning and you will be amazed at how much the little ones will pick up.

Have a simple routine doing activities when everyone is awake that all the children can share at their various levels and during naptime provide activities with small pieces and art supplies for the older children.

Any child that is constantly underfoot and clingy generally just needs a smile and a good firm hug, which will allow him/her the security to play away from your feet for a few minutes.
