Qualifications

  • A love for children and the ability to accept and value all children.
  • Physical fitness.
  • A family who is supportive of you operating an approved family day home.
  • A home and yard that are neat, clean, child proofed and smoke free. No apartments will be accepted above the ground floor level. Trampolines, swimming pools and some dogs are not accepted.
  • Security and Child Welfare clearances for you and everyone age 12 and older in your home, including boarders.
  • First Aid in Child Care certification.
  • Willingness to participate and complete the required training for family day home providers. (See “Training”)
  • Willingness to maintain agency standards, some of which are:
    - The number and ages of children, including your own:
       - No more than 6 children under the age of 13.
       - No more than 3 children under the age of 3.
       - No more than 2 children under the age of 2.
    - Appropriate child guidance.
    - No harsh or abusive behaviours such as hitting, slapping, screaming at or demeaning children.
    - Use of home environment and routines to meet the developmental needs of each child in care – socially, physically, intellectually, emotionally and creatively. Television, video and computer games must be limited and screened.
    - Medications (and vitamins) must be stored in a locked place.
    - Appropriate handwashing and diapering procedures.
