Our History

Southgate Family Day Homes opened November 1, 1982, formed by owners Joyce Backstrom and Carole Kosteriva. What they assumed would be a small part-time business around the Southgate area quickly became a much needed service throughout South Edmonton to parents who preferred the small group, mixed age setting of an approved family day home for their children.

16 Southgate Family Day Homes quickly took the lead in setting new standards for family day homes such as 1st Aid requirements, non-smoking environments and training for care providers.  In 1994 Carole, as head of the training committee of the Alberta Association for Family Child Care, supervised the development of Step Ahead Training for family child care providers.  In 2003, Medallion Family Day Homes joined with Southgate Family Day Homes, to form Southgate Medallion Family Day Homes, offering city wide and Sherwood Park child care service.  Our dedicated providers and consultants are committed to the best practices in child care.
