How much would I pay for child care?
Note that the cost varies depending on the number of hours the child is in care.
See the attached fee schedule that we recommend to Providers.
Subsidies are available from the Provincial Government
and the City of Edmonton.
How many children are allowed in regulated family day homes?
A total of 6 children under the age of 13 including the provider’s own, of which no more
than 2 are allowed under age 2 , and 3 under age 3. We are working in this region to
pilot a change of those regulations to 2 under 19 months, 4 under age 3 or a total of 6
under age 13, for those providers who want to care for the younger children only.
How are providers screened and approved?
Please see our Providers page.
What are the hours of operation?
As contracted workers, each provider sets her own hours to fit her own situation. Most day
homes are open between 7am and 5:30 pm only. Some will accept various hours including
evening, overnight and weekend care.
Will the food be supplied?
Providers supply the food except for infants who come with bottles filled and infant food
until the child is able to eat the food the provider supplies. At about a year of age, there
is a usually a transition period where parents leave bottled junior food for days when the
provider is serving something the toddler cannot and will not eat. The standard is that each
snack will consist of 2 food groups and each meal will consist of all 4 food groups.
Do the providers have training in child care?
Each new provider receives core training, usually lasting
6 months and then progresses to one of the accepted family child care training programs.
Many providers have Alberta Child Care Levels 1, 2 or 3 - Level 3 being a diploma in a 2 year
ECD –Early Childhood Development program (at Grant MacEwan College) or the equivalent.
What kind of activities can I expect the caregiver to provide?
Providers agree to provide a wide range of activities to meet each child’s physical, emotional,
social and intellectual needs, including daily outside play.
