Accreditation
Southgate Medallion Family Day Homes is the first family day home agency in
Alberta to meet the provincial accreditation standards. This accomplishment
was met on 28 June, 2005.
The Provincial Department of Child and Family Services, the Alberta Child
Care Network and the Canadian Child Care Federation join efforts to develop
and fund the first child care accreditation program in Canada. The Alberta
Association for the Accreditation of Early Learning and Care Services opened
in October, 2004. Southgate Medallion was the first family day home agency
in Alberta to receive accreditation, awarded June 29th, 2005 following our
site visit from the Accreditation Team on June 13th and 14th , 2005.
The following is a quote from the letter we received:
"Accreditation symbolizes quality. To achieve accreditation the management, staff and parents of a child care service have had to undertake a comprehensive and time consuming process to gather and demonstrate the necessary evidence that their program provides a high standard of care to the children and families it serves.
"Congratulations to you and your staff for this achievement. A certificate of Accreditation will follow in the near future.

Accreditation Feedback Report from AELCS - Alberta Early Learning
and Childcare Services:
The AELCS recognizes your hard work and effort in completing the
Accreditation process and congratulates you on your achievements. Below are
listed a number of areas in which you have demonstrated outstanding best
practices. We applaud your performance in:
Facilities and Practices: The use of universal health & safety
practices and precautions by providers was excellent and consistently used
in all homes. All providers practiced exemplary supervision practices.
Sufficient age appropriate toys and equipment were in place.
Interaction and Daily Experiences: Validators found many examples of
high quality interactions between your providers and children and families.
Providers are described as wonderful, loving, caring, nurturing, supportive,
and attentive. Best practices as it relates to meeting individual needs of
children in the home were demonstrated through choices for children in
activities, toys, food, flexible routines and smooth transitions.
Portfolio development: Files, policies and procedures are extremely
organized, prolific and in place. Excellent portfolio development.
Program Assessment and Goal Setting: The Quality Enhancement Plan
demonstrated a thorough examination of practices, thoughtful self assessment
and the development of effective goals, many of which you have already
achieved and others in your work plan.
Thank you for your contributions to making Alberta child care programs some
of the best in Canada !

"The process of becoming accredited created an environment of working together for a common goal. Since then I have seen an increase in awareness of the professional aspect of being a day home provider. Providers are accessing training around child development, literacy, health issues and more - with an interest in up-grading to best practices.
